Standardised measures of functional independence in daily living activities (such as the Barthel Index), the Functional Independence Measure and Functional Assessment Measure (FIM + FAM) are widely used across the Western world to evaluate global disability and the outcome of rehabilitation programmes. The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), allows description of the impact of any health condition at a number of levels, including impairment of body structures and function, limitation in activities and restriction of participation.
